Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk and the list goes on…
We were kids once too, and I am sure there are many of us who were big fans of superheroes as children, maybe still as adults.

Superheroes never get old. They have positive traits that can teach children how to become more kind and compassionate. Every individual who has donated to, volunteered at, or attended an event of our charity is a valuable superhero to us! This Spring we are asking all our superheroes to help us as we take on an inspiring project to rejuvenate the waiting area/playroom and update medical equipment for the five physician exam rooms at the Pediatric Clinic at our regional hospital.

The Pediatric Clinic, located on the third floor of the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre is staffed with three physicians, one LPN and an administrative clerk. They are hoping to add a fourth pediatrician and clinical associate to the team as well. It sees approximately 4,500 child’s visits per year. While this number may seem high, it includes some children who require multiple visits per year.

According to our pediatric healthcare professionals, pediatric waiting rooms aren't just holding areas anymore—they're becoming therapeutic environments that can dramatically reduce child anxiety. A play-friendly thoughtfully designed play space makes a visit feel less intimidating, transforming the doctor’s office into a more welcoming positive environment. Play areas also encourage cognitive development (books and puzzles), physical development (coordination and motor skills through interactive games) and social skills (sharing and taking turns).
The current playroom was created by our Foundation 18 years ago through a donor partnership. With your help we will purchase new toys, books, a Smart TV and new paint, with a focus on pediatric therapeutics (colours and shapes, etc.)

In addition, we will replace several physician exam rooms tables with new pediatric-specific exam tables (one of which will have
integrated weight and height functions). We will also replace and add new clinical equipment such as blood pressure monitors and ophthalmoscope sets. This will ensure a comfortable and child-friendly environment for the pediatric visitors.

In the weeks leading up to our Celebration Day, we are inviting individuals, organizations, schools and local businesses to join our “Superhero Community Challenge” and share your “Supertalents” to raise funds for your Pediatric Clinic.
Several ways you can get involved in the challenge:
-
Host an event of your own creation for a day, a week, or a month.
-
Participate in our Hero “Cash in a Can” Challenge – design your own hero-themed donation can, register it with the Foundation, display it at your office, school, or club to collect funds. Prizes will be awarded for Best Decorated Can and Highest Fundraiser!
-
Participate in “Capes for Kids Day” on National Superhero Day – April 28th. We encourage you to wear your cape to work in honour of a child who loves superheroes! Employees can make a small donation to present to the Foundation.
Whatever your choice of fundraiser, staff at the Foundation are ready to help you make it a success. We encourage you to share your photos by tagging us on Facebook and joining us on Celebration Day to present your donations in person. Can’t make it in person, let us know and we can arrange a donation presentation at your place of work. Please reach out to Jenna at (709) 292-2623, or jennal.budgell@nlhealthservices.ca.
We are inviting you to drop by the Exploits Nordic Ski Lodge, located on Scott Avenue in Grand Falls-Windsor, for a day of celebration and giving, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 14th to make your donation in person. Enjoy some refreshments, music, and have your photo taken so we can share it with our social media friends. Can’t make it in person, check in on all the happenings by following our hourly check-ins through our Facebook page @ www.facebook.com/schf83.

There is strength in the power of working together. Let’s team up so all kids can be unstoppable.
